Our Strategic Priorities

We provide education for all and develop proactive youths that transform the society

According to a UNICEF report in 2022, Nigeria has about 20 million out-of-school children. The Vanguard also published that 75% of school children in Nigeria do not have the required literacy and numeracy skills. At y4redinitiative we believe that education is a basic human right that every child should be given.
More so, most often the children who lack access to education are those from vulnerable and marginalised groups/ communities and those from the poorest households most of whom are found in rural communities. This trend has led to many youths who do not have any form of formal education and at the same time no in-demand skills needed to navigate through an ever-changing world.

Education enhances inclusion, economic growth, political participation, and sustainable development. However, over 50% of Nigeria’s children and youths risk not being educated in a world where education is a basic human right. Lack of access to education, training, and employment opportunities, deprives them of the opportunity to contribute to creating a just, peaceful inclusive and sustainable world.
Furthermore, one of the major constraints to the delivery of quality education in Nigerian schools is the lack of trained teachers and learning facilities. Therefore, to tackle some of these problems we are leveraging collaboration, innovation, and technology to provide school-age children and youths access to quality learning, vocational, entrepreneurship and education for sustainable development, especially for those who are grossly marginalised.

LITERACY DEVELOPMENT

In 2020, UNICEF published a report that shows that millions of Nigerian children aged between the ages of 5 and 14 are out of school and just about 35.6 per cent of children aged 36-59 months were receiving early childhood education in Nigeria. More so, more than 50% of children in Primary 1 to Primary 3 cannot read a word and 60% of grade 3 children cannot complete a single-digit addition problem. To be able to contribute effectively to achieving sustainable development both in Nigeria and globally these children need to be equipped with at least a quality basic education. Literacy is vital for lifelong learning and a compulsory requirement for human development. With our literacy projects, we work to equip school-age children with literacy and numeracy skills while advocating and promoting early childhood education.

ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION

About 20 million children are currently not in school in Nigeria. Beyond the alarming rate of out-of-school children in the country, many children who are enrolled in school do not have access to quality education. The poor quality of teachers, lack of access to relevant books, and lack of supervision in schools have been recorded as some of the constraints to educational development in Nigeria. Presently we are running the #adoption a distance scheme through which we reinstate dropouts and enrol never at school children. Furthermore, we run mobile libraries in rural communities where we work. In addition, we hold periodic professional training for our trainers alongside public school teachers while collaborating with them to ensure that pupils in rural public primary schools receive quality, practical and supervised basic education. Presently our target is to help 1000 school-age children in Ebonyi state gain basic literacy and numeracy skill by 2027.

EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The world is faced with numerous global challenges ranging from climate change to hunger, poverty, inequality and loss of biodiversity. According to the multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report of the national bureau of statistics in 2022, 67.5 million out of 99,6 million children in Nigeria are multidimensionally poor. More so about half the population of Nigerian youths are unemployed. Poverty is a major driver of biodiversity loss and over-extraction which consequently lead to environmental degradation. No one must be left behind if a sustainable economy, environment and society will be attained globally. Therefore, we train selected youths on sustainability practices in the context of their country, region, and communities. With their knowledge, we support them to acquire relevant skills that will help them gain economic empowerment while protecting the environment and embracing global citizenship education to ensure a peaceful, sane and thriving society.
